Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team under variety identifier 1924-D 5-cent WRPM-002, this is the second documented repunched mint mark for the 1924-D Buffalo Nickel from the Denver Mint. During this era, mint marks were individually hand-punched into each working die at branch mints, a process that frequently resulted in misaligned initial impressions requiring correction. When the engraver noticed an improper position, a second impression was applied in the correct location, leaving traces of both punches on the finished die and every coin it struck. The 1924-D had a mintage of approximately 5.3 million, placing it among the semi-key dates. Lower mintage meant fewer working dies, yet hand-punching still generated multiple RPM varieties for this date, reflecting how common misalignment was regardless of production volume. Buffalo Nickels from the 1920s are prime territory for repunched mint mark hunting, as individual die punching continued until the Mint began incorporating mint marks directly into master hubs decades later.
