Description

Credited to Laurence Galbraith from his April 2005 research, the 1923-P VAM-1AG identifies a Peace Dollar obverse die bearing a diagonal die scratch running through the O in GOD and extending upward to above the letter G. Designated 1AG II 1 with reverse die B2a (Diagonal Die Scratch O), rated I-2 for interest and R-5 for rarity (an estimated 1,001 to 3,000 surviving), this variety's primary diagnostic is a raised diagonal line traversing the O and continuing beyond it — a path long enough to serve as a reliable attribution marker under moderate magnification. Die scratches are incised lines introduced during die polishing, handling, or storage that fill with metal during the striking process and appear raised on the finished coin. The diagonal trajectory through O and upward past G suggests a single stroke from a polishing tool or accidental contact. De Francisci's Peace Dollar was in its second year of normal-relief production in 1923, with Philadelphia producing over 30 million examples. Struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm.
