Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1923 $1 WDDR-001 and cross-referenced as VAM-3 and TH-DDR-001, this Peace Dollar reverse exhibits a strong spread to the east across multiple design elements: the olive branch and leaves, the rays running through the olive branch, the rays to the left of the lower back of the eagle, the tail feathers to the left of the eagle's talon, and the word DOLLAR. Die markers include a die crack along the base of the bust on the obverse and two parallel die scratches running northwest-southeast between the two rays directly below the right side of the M in UNUM on the reverse. The photos of this variety were taken by Brian Allen for the Wexler Files. The strong eastward spread across five distinct reverse design areas — encompassing both the eagle's body elements and the denomination inscription — indicates a substantial hub displacement during die manufacture that exceeded the visibility threshold across a broad zone of the reverse die face. The Peace Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci, struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. The 1923 Philadelphia issue had one of the highest mintages in the entire Peace Dollar series, exceeding 30 million coins. As WDDR-001, this variety holds the primary reversed doubled die position for the date, and its triple cross-referencing across the Wexler, VAM, and TH systems reflects its established significance within the Peace Dollar collecting community. The strong intensity classification means this doubling is visible under standard loupe magnification.
