Description

Twin clash spikes rising vertically from the eagle's right shoulder distinguish VAM-1AC on the 1923 Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar, a variety discovered by David Close. The plate designation II 1 - B2a indicates Obverse Die Class II (normal die), die pair 1, and Reverse Die Class B2a. Rated I-2 (significant) and R-6 (75 to 150 known). Die clashing occurs when obverse and reverse dies contact each other without an intervening planchet, and in this case the clash event transferred design elements that appear as two separated long vertical spikes projecting upward from the eagle's shoulder on the reverse. Twin spikes from a single clash event suggest that two distinct high points on the opposing die made contact at slightly different positions, each leaving its own mark. This variety was later reassigned as VAM-1AC2, reflecting an updated classification within the evolving VAM catalog. Philadelphia Mint production.
