Holding the distinguished Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM designation, this 1923 Philadelphia die marriage is classified as 1A2 II1 - B2a (Whisker Jaw, Die Break LI) and ranks among the most significant Peace Dollar varieties cataloged. Discovered by Ben Wengel in October 2008, the variety features a radial die crack between L and I in LIBERTY with a displaced field die break — a progressive fracture where a die section adjacent to the crack has shifted, creating a raised irregular area on struck coins. The Top 50 designation, reserved for the most collectible Peace Dollar VAMs, ensures strong market recognition. Struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia with the distinctive TRVST reverse, the 1923 is one of the higher-mintage Peace Dollar dates, yet VAM-1A2 appears nearly as available as VAM-1A, suggesting the die saw extensive use before and after the break developed. The die break at LI had reportedly been known among specialists before Wengel formally submitted it for catalog inclusion. The "Whisker Jaw" nickname refers to die scratches near Liberty's jaw resembling facial hair.
