1923 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

An extra eyelid visible south of Lincoln's normal eyelid provides the most distinctive diagnostic for this Wexler-attributed 1923 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-001. Doubled die obverses frequently manifest on lettering or numerals, making the anatomical eyelid doubling on Victor David Brenner's portrait an immediately recognizable and unusual attribution checkpoint. The secondary eyelid contour appears below the primary, creating a doubled profile best examined under 7x to 10x magnification. A die scratch running west-southwest to east-northeast to the left of the top of the G in GOD serves as the obverse die marker, providing independent confirmation of the working die. No significant reverse die markers have been documented. This Philadelphia Mint issue carries no mintmark, as was standard practice. Struck in bronze — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — at 3.11 grams. After confirming the extra eyelid below Lincoln's lower lid, trace the die scratch near the G in GOD to verify the specific die match and complete the WDDO-001 attribution.
