1923 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Displaying extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST, this 1923 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-001 represents the primary doubled die obverse cataloged for the date. Die markers include UVC-2520 and DMR-002. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state; Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed early die state at Stage A provides the sharpest view of the extra thickness before progressive die wear diminishes the doubling's visibility. Lincoln Wheat Cents from the early 1920s were struck in an era when hub technology and die preparation methods could introduce measurable doubling during the multiple impressions required to fully sink a design into a working die. The extra thickness across three distinct inscription groups — date, motto, and LIBERTY — indicates a broad hub displacement affecting the entire obverse rather than a localized anomaly. Collectors should examine each area under moderate magnification to confirm the variety.
