Description

First and only documented cud for the 1923 Lincoln Wheat Cent, this die break records a complete rim fracture from a date struck during the Roaring Twenties economic boom. The 1923 Philadelphia Mint cent had a mintage of approximately 74.7 million — a relatively modest figure for the era, making it one of the lower-mintage Philadelphia dates in the 1920s Wheat Cent series. CU-1C-1923-01 in the Cuds on Coins catalog documents the sole known instance of a die developing a full rim separation for this date. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and separates entirely under the cyclic stress of high-speed coin production, and the void left by the missing fragment fills with metal during each subsequent strike. The lower mintage of 1923-P relative to other Twenties dates may partly explain why only one cud has been documented — fewer dies were needed for the production run, reducing the statistical opportunity for rim fractures to develop. Additionally, lower production volumes mean fewer surviving coins available for examination, further constraining discovery potential. The single documented cud for 1923 stands in marked contrast to the dozens known for high-mintage wartime dates, illustrating the direct relationship between production volume and error frequency.
