A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and separates entirely under the cyclic stress of high-speed coin production, and the void left by the missing fragment fills with metal during each subsequent strike. The lower mintage of 1923-P relative to other Twenties dates may partly explain why only one cud has been documented — fewer dies were needed for the production run, reducing the statistical opportunity for rim fractures to develop.
