Description

Designated as the primary repunched mintmark for the 1918 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel, RPM-001 carries catalog identifiers UVC-040 and die marriage DMR-003. During this period, each working die received its mintmark through a hand-punching process performed by Mint engravers, and slight misalignments between successive punch applications produced the doubled mintmark impressions that characterize RPM varieties. As the first cataloged RPM for this date, RPM-001 holds a baseline position in the variety's research catalog. Fraser's Buffalo Nickel design was in its sixth year of production by 1918, featuring the Type 2 reverse with the bison standing on a flat, recessed plain. The 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy was standard throughout the series run from 1913 to 1938. Variety collectors pursuing Denver Mint Buffalo Nickels will find RPM-001 among the most accessible entry points for this date.
