1918 (D) Buffalo Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-101, the 1918-D Buffalo nickel DDO-001 is VarietyVista's doubled die obverse that shows the date as 8/7; Wexler numbers it WDDO-001 and writes the cross-reference FS-05-1918D-101 (016.5). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties explains the variety as a hub dated 1918 pressed into a working die that already carried the 1917 date, giving the 1918/7. Its obverse marker is a die crack from the braid ribbon to the jaw; no reverse markers are noted. J. T. Stanton submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-O-III. VarietyVista describes strong doubling that shows as an 8/7 in the date, gives the reporter as unknown, and notes that its current photos are courtesy of Bill Fivaz. It tracks the die under its marker codes UVC-039 and DMR-002 through an early stage A, a middle stage B and a late stage C, none yet confirmed.
