1915 (S) Buffalo Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002 / RPM-001

Description

VarietyVista's RPM-001, which Wexler numbers WRPM-002, is a 1915-S Buffalo nickel whose mint mark was punched three times, an S/S/S with the extra S images to the north and south. Both catalogs list it as FS-501 (Wexler writes it FS-05-1915S-501 (015.5)). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties also describes it as S/S/S North and South. Its obverse marker is a short die scratch heading east from the chin. On the reverse, east-west die scratches lie in the gap from the VE of FIVE to the C of CENTS, and further die scratches run WSW away from the F of FIVE, starting at its upper left. The coin was submitted by J.T. Stanton, and CONECA lists it as RPM #1. VarietyVista credits Norm Talbert with the report and records the same S/S/S North, South punching. Under its marker codes UVC-024 and DMR-002 it confirms stage A, with reverse and obverse in an early die state; a middle stage B and a late stage C are unconfirmed.
