Description

Discovered by Jym Braun in April 1999, the 1900-P VAM-25 documents a slightly doubled right inside of Liberty's ear — a subtle hub doubling variety where a secondary impression created extra contour detail within the ear's interior. Classified as III220 with reverse die C3a and Die Pair Identification Sequence LE3/B45RE, the variety's obverse die falls in the twentieth subset of the III2 grouping, indicating specific shared positional characteristics with related die pairings. Doubled ear varieties on Morgan Dollars are particularly valued by portrait-focused collectors because the ear sits in one of the most scrutinized areas of Morgan's Liberty Head — the complex interplay of hair curls, the ear itself, and the surrounding design elements makes even slight doubling detectable to experienced attributors. The extra contour on the right inside of the ear suggests the hub displaced slightly during the second hubbing impression, creating a measurable secondary outline within the ear's curved interior surface. The 1900 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was produced as the series entered the twentieth century, with production continuing through 1904 before the final 1921 encore.
