1900-P VAM-13

Description

Discovered by Oscar Simpson in May 1978, the 1900-P VAM-13 is a Near Slanted Date, Doubled 1-0 variety on the Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar. Classified as 13 III2 11 - C3a (Near Slanted Date, Doubled 1-0) (188), this variety presents a distinctive date arrangement: the digits are set further left than normal and slanted with the 1 positioned close to the rim. The 1 is slightly doubled at the bottom, and the first 0 shows slight doubling on its bottom as well. These subtle doublings on the date digits require careful magnification to confirm, as the displacement is small. The reverse carries the standard C3a designation. The die pair identification sequence is B23C. Simpson's discovery nearly five decades ago established this as one of the earlier documented VAM varieties for the 1900-P date, and the near slanted date positioning provides a visual cue that collectors can spot even before confirming the doubling under magnification. The combination of an unusual date slant with doubled digits on two of the four numerals makes the VAM-13 a variety that rewards methodical examination of 1900 Philadelphia Morgan dollars, particularly specimens where the date area is well preserved.
