Description
Discovered by Jay Galst in February 1980, the 1889-S VAM-8 is classified as III2 5 - C3a (187) in the Van Allen-Mallis system. This variety features a doubled 1 in the date and a far slanted date position. The numeral 1 shows slight doubling below its base, and the entire date is set further right than the normal position, with the 9 placed farther from the rim, creating a noticeable slant. The far slant distinguishes VAM-8 from other 1889-S die marriages that carry a normal or near-date position. Morgan dollar VAM collecting has grown into one of numismatics' most detailed subspecialties, with hundreds of die pairings cataloged across the series' production run from 1878 through 1921. Date position varieties like this one are among the most accessible entry points for VAM collectors, as the shifted placement is often visible without high magnification. The San Francisco mint struck 700,000 Morgan dollars in 1889, a modest output that adds to the appeal of identified die varieties.
