1888-P VAM-7D1
Error
Description
Representing a specific stage in the progressive deterioration of a single die pair, VAM-7D1 of the 1888 Morgan Dollar sits within a documented die state sequence running from VAM-7C2 through VAM-7D1 to VAM-7D2. Revised in August 2023 by Jonnie Durham from the earlier VAM-7D designation, this reclassification refined the die state progression. Cataloged as 7D1 III2 5 C3d, the variety features a doubled reverse with die chips and is specifically identified as Gouge State 8, indicating the eighth documented stage of a progressive die gouge on the reverse. The C3d reverse carries an added gouge at the back of the upper arrowhead, a feature that developed as the die accumulated damage through continued use. Die state progression studies are fundamental to VAM collecting, as they reveal how a single working die evolves from early pristine state through accumulating cracks, chips, and gouges until retirement. The 1888 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar had a substantial mintage, and the depth of the VAM-7 sub-varieties reflects intense scrutiny by the VAMWorld community. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this Morgan Dollar documents mid-progression die deterioration.
