Description

Revised in August 2023 from VAM 7C by Jonnie Durham, the 1888-P VAM-7C2 documents a progressive die state within the VAM-7 family: Doubled Reverse, Die Chips, Gouge State 7. The die pair is designated 7C2 III2 5 · C3d. The obverse (III2 5) serves as the consistent anchor across the die state progression, while the reverse (C3d) shows the defining characteristic of this state — an added gouge between the lower arrow shaft and the end of the olive branch, distinguishing it from earlier stages. This variety sits within a documented progressive die state lineage: the previous stage is VAM 7C1, and the next stage is VAM 7D1. Tracking these sequential stages allows researchers to reconstruct the working life of a single reverse die as it accumulated damage over its production run. The Doubled Reverse designation indicates hub doubling on reverse design elements, while Die Chips and Gouge State 7 describe progressive deterioration features. Philadelphia Mint, silver composition. Collectors pursuing die state progressions value the VAM-7 family for its thorough stage-by-stage documentation.
