Description
Discovered in 2016 by Brent Fogelberg, the 1888-P VAM-18A Morgan Dollar carries the classification 18A III2 14 - C3a and combines four distinct features: a doubled eyelid, the numeral 8 extending into the denticles, a far date position, and two dot gouges on the reverse. The Reverse C3a die shows two tiny raised semi-circular dot gouges at the back of the eagle's neck, spaced 0.040 inches apart with approximately 0.005-inch diameter, accompanied by several parallel lines on the surface surrounding them. These precise measurements help distinguish the VAM-18A from other 1888 Philadelphia varieties sharing similar but not identical reverse characteristics. The doubled eyelid on Liberty's portrait and the 8 touching the denticles provide obverse attribution points, while the far date lateral position places the numerals toward the right side of the date's expected range. This four-feature combination makes the VAM-18A a particularly well-defined variety within the 1888-P Morgan Dollar die marriage network.
