Description

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-7.1 under classification III2 7 with a C3a reverse, titled High Date, carrying a rarity rating of 190. The obverse is defined by an entire date set higher than normal, visible without magnification on well-preserved specimens. Both open and closed 6 sub-varieties exist within this designation, adding a secondary classification layer for advanced specialists. The date position is indexed as DPIS LH3/B45LE. A VAMWorld discussion from August 2023 by user keilg1 documented a specimen exhibiting VAM-7 attributes but potentially from a unique die pairing, suggesting the variety may warrant future die study expansion. The contributor has offered additional photographs and the opportunity to examine the coin in hand. The high date position is a relatively common variety type for Morgan dollars, but the VAM-7.1 designation and its rarity rating of 190 place it within the more accessible range for collectors building die-variety sets of the 1886 Philadelphia production.
