1886 Morgan Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1886 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1886 Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. The point of the eyelid has a very minor split, and the earlobe is thickened to the south. The obverse also carries WRPD-001, a repunched 18 in the date, seen as a strong bar beneath the 1's top serif and a visible line of separation inside the bottom of the first 8. Light cracks run from the bottom of the neck and east from the throat through the hair behind the head, and a gouge sits inside the ear. On the reverse, a light crack marks the bottom of the second leaf, and the knot has a break on its left side. John A. Wexler submitted the variety, with photos by Brian Allen. Its VAM number is 4.
