1886 Repunched Date WRPD-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as VAM-4 (Wexler Variety ID: 1886 $1 WRPD-001), the 1886 Morgan Dollar WRPD-001 is a repunched date variety showing the 18 punched a second time with a slight offset: a strong bar is visible beneath the top serif of the 1, and a separation line appears at the bottom interior of the first 8. A companion doubled die, WDDO-001, is also present on this obverse and shows a minor split at the eyelid point and a thick ear lobe to the south. Additional obverse die markers include light die cracks from the bottom of the neck and from the throat heading east through the hair, plus a die gouge inside the ear. On the reverse, a light die crack runs along the bottom of the second leaf and a break appears on the left side of the knot. Repunched date varieties on Morgan Dollars reflect the era's practice of individually punching dates into working dies by hand, making positional errors and repunching recurring features. The 1886 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is well represented in higher grades, and the multiple obverse crack and marker characteristics documented here give collectors reliable confirmation points across different die states.
