Error
Description
Discovered by Mark Kimpton in May 2003 and attributed by Mitch Hill. Designated 1886-P VAM-1D Pitted OL. Full classification: 1D III2 1 — C3a (Pitted OL) (189). The reverse, C3a, defines the variety: the die surface surrounding OL in DOLLAR is pitted, producing a distinctive rough texture visible under moderate magnification. The obverse supplies a secondary diagnostic — the ear is doubled inside — providing a second confirmation point. The 1886-P Morgan Dollar was struck in large Philadelphia quantities, making VAM-1D one of the more accessible entries in the extensive 1886-P VAM family. Reverse die pitting of this kind arises from foreign matter in the die steel or from localized corrosion during storage; the pitted OL on this working die remained stable through its service life and appears consistently across the VAM-1D population.
