Description

Attributed to Maurice Dubreuil in November 1974, the 1884-O VAM-18 is catalogued as 18 III2 6 C3b for Far Date, Dash Under 8. The obverse die III2 6 presents two characteristics: the date is set further right than typical for this issue, and a dash — a small horizontal raised line — appears below the second 8. This dash is the key diagnostic feature separating this pairing from the similarly positioned VAM-5 and VAM-28. The reverse die C3b carries a circular III-style O mintmark with a wide opening, though a research note suggests the "round O" attribution may be in error and should likely read "oval O," with resolution pending. An additional note flags this as likely a duplicate of 1884-O VAM-5 and possibly VAM-28, pending official review. The 1884-O Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint in very large quantities, making its die variety population correspondingly extensive. Far date obverses — where the entire date cluster sits toward the right of its normal position — are among the more sought position varieties in this series. =1884-O VAM-18 Far Date, Dash Under 8= Discovered by Maurice Dubreuil, November 1974.
