1884-CC VAM-6

Description

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen in May 1973 and revised in 2008, the 1884-CC VAM-6 is catalogued as 6 (revised) III2 6 - C3b (Doubled 18 and Left C). The Carson City Mint — operating in Nevada from 1870 to 1893 — produced some of the most coveted Morgan Dollars in the series, combining Western frontier history with 90% silver coinage. VAM-6's obverse shows doubling on the first two date digits: the 1 is slightly doubled on its right side, while the left 8 shows doubling on the right side of the lower loop and top right outside of the upper loop. The reverse die C3b carries independent markers: isolated fine polishing lines around the eagle's tail feathers and legs; a die gouge dot at the ninth outer feather edge from the bottom of the eagle's left wing — a precise and reliable anchor; and the first C of the CC mintmark doubled on the left inside. The combination of obverse date doubling and reverse mintmark doubling on a Carson City coin makes VAM-6 a multi-feature variety. The emission sequence documents VAM-6 and VAM-2 sharing this reverse die, providing additional die history for specialists.
