1883 (O) Morgan Dollar - VAM-24

Description

Louis Davis first documented the 1883-O VAM-24 Morgan Dollar in February 1979, and it carries the Van Allen-Madison classification 24 III2 1 – C3m (Doubled Reverse) with die pairing number 181. The reverse (C3m) is the defining feature: middle leaves in both the left and right wreaths are doubled toward the rim, and the top inside of the wreath bow along with designer George T. Morgan's initial M show clear doubling — hub displacement artifacts where the secondary hub impression shifted outward relative to the first, pushing the doubled images of these wreath and bow elements toward the coin's periphery. Community commentary provides candid field observations, noting that specimens of this variety typically come with atrocious strikes — weak overall detail from insufficient striking pressure — and that the doubling itself is described as "sorta pathetic" in its subtlety, but offset by a good distinctive die chip on the upper tail feathers of the eagle that serves as a reliable quick-identification marker even on weakly struck examples. The Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1883, composed of 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter and a reeded edge. The 1883-O is notable in the Morgan series as the first year of the "O" mintmark without the arrows design change, with a mintage of approximately 8.7 million pieces. George T. Morgan's obverse depicts Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, while his reverse eagle is framed by the wreath whose doubled leaves define this variety. The combination of characteristically weak strikes with the diagnostic tail feather die chip gives this variety a distinctive collecting profile where condition and strike quality vary significantly across the surviving population.
