1883-O VAM-21
Error
Description
Martin Field documented this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar variety in October 1978, identifying doubled date digits that distinguish this die from the normal 1883-O production. Cataloged as VAM-21 with classification III2 11 - C3a (Doubled 18) and die pairing 181, the obverse shows the numeral 1 doubled on the surface at the top right of its vertical shaft, while the first digit 8 displays slight doubling at the lower left inside of the upper loop. The reverse carries a normal C3a die with no remarkable features. Date doubling on Morgan Dollars results from the logotype punching process: a four-digit date punch was driven into the soft working die, and if the alignment shifted between successive blows, the incuse date impression received a second slightly offset image. The 1883-O Morgan Dollar holds particular significance in numismatics as the year the New Orleans Mint also struck the famous "No Cents" Liberty Head Nickel — though the Morgan Dollar program continued independently with approximately 8.7 million silver dollars produced. The Gilded Age New Orleans facility operated in a humid subtropical environment that presented ongoing challenges for die maintenance, and the large number of documented VAMs for this date reflects both the volume of production and the dedication of researchers like Field who systematically examined thousands of coins. The doubled 18 is best observed under 5x to 10x magnification with strong directional lighting to catch the subtle separation on the serif details.
