Error
Description
Discovered by Vamhusker in 2019 and classified as III2 23 C3a, this 1882-O Morgan Dollar variety exhibits doubled 882 with clashed G, t, and M. The obverse is a clashed die showing a partial incuse G edge from the reverse positioned next to Liberty's head at the neck, and a partial incuse lowercase t from TRUST visible in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The reverse is also clashed, displaying a raised designer's initial M from the obverse appearing above the W in WE at the left edge. Die clashes on Morgan Dollars often produce fascinating ghost images where elements of one die are impressed into the opposing surface, and this variety captures three distinct letter transfers — G, t, and M — distributed across both dies. The New Orleans Mint struck the 1882-O in substantial quantities, and the doubled date digits (882) combined with the multi-letter clash make this a variety with strong visual appeal for cherrypickers. Struck in 90% silver with George T. Morgan's design.
