Error
Description
Discovered by Paul Williams in August 1966, the 1882-O VAM-10 is catalogued as 10 III2 7 C3a — Doubled 82, Open and Closed 2. The obverse III2 7 shows the top loop of the second 8 doubled at the top and at the bottom loop at the top right; the 2 is faintly doubled at the top. Short die chips appear between the loops of the first 8 on the left side. The "Open and Closed 2" descriptor reflects a secondary impression that produced both open and closed loop forms on the 2. The reverse C3a places the O mintmark centered and upright. The 1882-O had a New Orleans Mint production of approximately 6.1 million coins. New Orleans Morgans form a complete collecting series spanning 1879 through 1904. Williams' 1966 discovery came during the foundational phase of Morgan dollar die variety research, more than a decade before the Van Allen-Mallis reference published and systematized the growing list of known attributions.
