Description

Triple-attributed across three major variety references as CONECA RPM #1, VAM #7, and Wexler WRPM-001, this repunched mintmark on the 1882-O Morgan Dollar documents the hand-punched mintmark application process that defined 19th-century U.S. coinage. Each working die destined for the New Orleans Mint received its O mintmark from a small steel punch driven into the die face by hand, and when the engraver struck multiple times to properly seat the letter, slight repositioning between blows created overlapping impressions visible under magnification. The convergence of three independent attribution systems on a single variety — Wexler, CONECA, and VAM — reflects the broad collector interest in Morgan Dollar mintmark varieties and provides multiple avenues for identification and cross-verification. The New Orleans Mint operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced Morgan Dollars prized for their historical Southern provenance. George T.
