Description

Mark Kimpton discovered this New Orleans Morgan dollar in August 2004, classifying it as 26A III2 15 with a C3a reverse, designated Doubled 18, Clashed Obverse us. The obverse III2 15 die is clashed, showing partial incuse u and s from Trust transferred from the reverse, visible in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The reverse C3a is a normal die. This variety may represent a later die state of 1881-O VAM-26. The same obverse die also appears in 1881-O VAM-51, which pairs it with the reverse of 1881-O VAM-38; VAM-26A is the earlier marriage of these two pairings. The incuse u and s in the hair vee provide a reliable screening diagnostic, since no obverse detail should appear in that area, making the transferred reverse letters immediately suspect at moderate magnification. Die clash transfers are among the more visually interesting VAM features.
