1881-O Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Triple-cross-referenced across three major attribution systems, this repunched mint mark on the 1881 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar demonstrates the thorough documentation that Morgan Dollar varieties receive. Cataloged as CONECA RPM #6, VAM #13, and Wexler Variety ID 1881-O $1 WRPM-001, the variety shows evidence that the O mint mark was punched into the working die more than once, with the secondary impression visible as doubling or displacement near the primary mark. Before 1990, every mint mark on United States coinage was individually hand-punched into each working die at the branch mint, and the New Orleans facility was particularly prone to repunched mint marks due to this manual process. The 1881-O Morgan Dollar was struck during the height of the series, when enormous quantities of silver dollars were produced under the Bland-Allison Act's mandate to purchase and coin silver.
