Description
1880-P VAM-21 Doubled Date, Stars & Motto, 8/7 Discovered by Dave Borofski, September 1973. Revised 2011. Revised 2018. Revised May 2023 to add 8/7 21 (revised) III2 21 ∙ C3a (Doubled Date, Stars & Motto, 8/7) Obverse III2 21 – Doubled date with 1 slightly below upper and lower crossbars, left 8 on bottom outside of lower loop with some showing a short spike between loops on right, right 8 slightly on lower left outside of upper loop and 0 at top left inside and slightly on lower left inside. On some die stages, there is a clear 8/7 visible as a checkmark on the left and a diagonal stroke on the right part of the 8. Doubled left and right stars and motto slightly E PLURIBUS UNUM towards rim. Reverse C3a - Die Marker - Wide die gouge at hair loop above zero. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Quality of strike and die wear may affect visibility of 8/7, as this wasn't seen on all coins examined.
