Description

Discovered by Mark Kimpton in June 2005 and renumbered as VAM-24A in June 2022, this 1879-O Morgan dollar is classified III2 17 with a C3h reverse and carries the formal title Doubled 9, Large O, Clashed Obverse n and st. The obverse die shows evidence of a die clash: a faint partial incuse impression of the lowercase n from the word In on the reverse appears next to Liberty's neck edge, and a partial incuse impression of the letters st from Trust shows in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The reverse C3h die is described as a normal die of the C3 type with a large style IV O centered mintmark. This variety was formerly cataloged as 1879-O VAM-3A before being renumbered to its current VAM-24A designation in June 2022. New Orleans Morgan dollars from 1879 are well studied among VAM collectors, and clash-transfer varieties like this one require careful examination of the neck and hair areas under magnification to confirm the incuse letter impressions. The doubled 9 in the date adds another attribution point that distinguishes this die from other 1879-O obverse dies.
