1879-O VAM-10

Description

Leonard Hinckley discovered the 1879-O VAM-10 Morgan dollar in February 1974, classifying it as III2 6 with a C3b reverse under the designation Doubled 8-9, Large O. The obverse doubling concentrates on the last two date digits: the 8 shows doubling at the left and top inside of its lower loop, with polishing marks inside the lower loop and at the lower right inside of the upper loop, while the 9 is doubled on the top surface of the left outside of the lower loop. The C3b reverse is a normal die of the C3 type bearing a large IV O mintmark described as centered. Cataloging commentary notes the mintmark characterization as generous, suggesting it might more accurately be described as set left and tilted right rather than truly centered. This editorial note reflects the ongoing refinement of VAM descriptions as researchers re-examine varieties with modern imaging. The 1879-O Morgan dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint during the second year of Morgan dollar production.
