About This Coin
Counterfeit British halfpennies produced at Thomas Machin's copper works in Newburgh, New York, circa 1787-1789. Operating under cover of a state copper coinage license, Machin and associates struck imitation George III halfpennies bearing fictitious dates. Over 20 die varieties are known, cataloged by Vlack numbers. These counterfeits circulated alongside genuine British coppers and authorized state copper coins.
