Description

ADC-1c-2009(FY)-01 is an atypical die clash on a 2009-P Lincoln Bicentennial cent with the Formative Years reverse, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. The obverse clash is strong and unabraded; the reverse marks are moderate. On the obverse, the log left marks that run through Lincoln's eyes from the top of his forehead, and from his nose tip. The apron and its bow show to the right of his chin, and the book Lincoln holds, together with his hand, clashed into the jaw area. Further marks come from the folds of the shirt and Lincoln's left arm, and the maul handle left a mark extending from the back of his head (not pictured). A weaker form of this clash, with only the lines under the chin, goes by the nickname "Catfish Abe" for those whisker-like lines. On the reverse, Lincoln's head, collar and the back of his neck made a mark near the maul handle reaching up to the N of CENT, and the edge of the collar left a line between Lincoln's right hand and arm. Die markers, besides the clash marks themselves: on the obverse, a crack across the brow and forehead, a vertical scratch on the nose, a small scratch under the nose and a diagonal scratch from the top of the Y in LIBERTY; on the reverse, a die crack on the arm above the book. MDC notes this clash looks much like (FY) 002, but this die has no minor DDO and its clash marks differ, so the markers are the way to tell the two apart.
