Description

Identified on the modern Jefferson portrait by Jamie Franki, WDDO-010 on the 2023-P Jefferson Nickel shows Class VIII tilted hub doubling on Jefferson's left eyelid—a precise and localized diagnostic that requires careful examination under magnification. Die markers on the obverse include a die scratch to the upper left of the JNF designer initials. The reverse die paired with this obverse is listed as 2023 P 5c WDDR-122, creating a die marriage that carries variety interest on both sides of the coin. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID: 2023-P WDDO-010. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar. Philadelphia Mint regular strike. The Franki portrait, introduced in 2006, presents a three-quarter view of Jefferson that differs substantially from the profile used on earlier issues, and doubled die diagnostics on this design concentrate on facial features and lettering rather than the hair detail that dominated attribution on the classic Schlag portrait. The die pairing with WDDR-122 offers dual-attribution potential for variety specialists.
