Description

Recognized as a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDR-001 exhibits very nice Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible above the top step and to the right and left of the center door above the steps on Monticello, with additional doubling on TICE of MONTICELLO. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during the hubbing process, producing a rotational spread that differs from the lateral or vertical shifts of other doubling classes. The tilted hub mechanism creates doubling that radiates from a pivot point, resulting in varying spread widths across the affected design elements. The "Best Of" designation recognizes this variety's strong, clearly visible doubling and its significance within the broader Jefferson Nickel doubled die catalog. Struck on the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition in Felix Schlag's design series. Die Markers: Obverse: Die dot to left of L of LIBERTY. Reverse: Die gouge to right of second L of MONTICELLO; die gouge to upper right of first O of MONTICELLO. These die markers provide reliable secondary attribution points for confirming the specific die pair.
