2023 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

First cataloged doubled die obverse for the 2023 Jefferson Nickel, this variety exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling showing nicely on Jefferson's left eyelid and right nostril. As the WDDO-001 designation indicates, this represents the primary doubled die obverse discovery for the year — typically the most visually prominent or significant variety identified. The facial detail location makes this variety identifiable with a standard loupe, as the doubling on the eyelid and nostril creates perceptible extra thickness on features that collectors naturally examine closely. Die markers include a die scratch between the I and N of IN on the obverse, a slanted die gouge above the right arch on the reverse, and close doubling inside the left edge of the left long window. Philadelphia Mint, standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition.
