Description

Representing a Class VIII (Tilted Hub) variety, WDDO-006 on the 2023-P Jefferson Nickel shows spread on GOD WE TRUST and the P mintmark. Tilted Hub doubling produces displacement that radiates from the tilt axis in a direction determined by the angle of the hub's cant, and the effect on both the motto and the mintmark indicates the tilt axis was oriented such that both design zones fell within the displacement field. Obverse die markers include a die scratch on Jefferson's collar at the lower right of the designer's initials JNF and a die gouge positioned above the O of GOD. No reverse die markers have been noted. The 2023-P Jefferson Nickel carries the updated obverse portrait introduced in 2022, based on Rembrandt Peale's 1800 portrait of Jefferson and designed by Phebe Hemphill — a forward-facing depiction replacing the classic Felix Schlag left-profile that served from 1938 through 2021. Doubling on the P mintmark provides a convenient first-check diagnostic, as mintmarks are small enough that even slight displacement produces a noticeable widening. Cross-referenced as Wexler 2023-P WDDO-006. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar.
