2022 VDDO VDDO-001
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista and attributed to the research of James Wiles, this 2022 Jefferson Nickel VDDO-001 exhibits light extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, the TY of LIBERTY, the date, and the mintmark — a doubling pattern affecting four separate inscription and identification elements distributed across the obverse die face. Die markers track three stages with provisional UVC and DMR numbers (UVC-???? / DMR-00?), indicating this variety was documented before final catalog numbers were assigned: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS featuring a die gouge in the upper D of GOD with the reverse also at MDS; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The "VDDO" designation — VarietyVista Doubled Die Obverse — follows VarietyVista's own naming convention distinct from the WDDO prefix used by the Wexler catalog system, reflecting the parallel but independent cataloging infrastructure maintained by different attribution services within the variety community. The Jefferson Nickel was redesigned in 2006 with a new forward-facing portrait by Jamie Franki for the obverse and a return to the Monticello reverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2022. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, the coin weighs 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.2 mm. As the first cataloged VDDO for the 2022 date, this variety establishes the starting point for the doubled die obverse inventory on the current Jefferson Nickel design, where the forward-facing portrait orientation presents different hub doubling characteristics than the earlier left-facing profile used from 1938 through 2003.
