Description

Employing the relatively uncommon Class VIII tilted hub doubling mechanism, this 2022 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse shows doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps on Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from a slight tilt of the hub relative to the die during the hubbing process, producing a rotational displacement distinct from the lateral shifts characteristic of more common doubling classes. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above Jefferson’s right eyelid, two gouges to the upper right of his right eyelid, and a die chip above his left eye. Reverse die markers feature a die dot between the first T and A of STATES, a die dot below the center crossbar of the E of STATES, and a die dot to the right of the T of MONTICELLO. The 2022 Jefferson Nickel carries the new obverse portrait introduced that year as part of the denomination’s design refresh, making doubled die varieties from 2022 first-year-of-type collectibles. WDDR-003 is the third documented doubled die reverse for this inaugural date of the redesigned series.
