2021 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Extra thickness on LIBERTY — particularly at the upper left of the Y, which is considerably thicker than the upper right — defines the primary doubling characteristic of WDDO-009 on the 2021-P Lincoln Shield Cent. Attributed by the Wexler Team and discovered by Albert Neils Sr., this variety carries obverse die markers of a die crack running north from the front of the eyebrow and a small die gouge below the I of IN. Reverse die markers include a die crack on the upper left of the shield north of E PL in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Cross-references span three attribution systems: Coppercoins 2021P-1DO-003 and VarietyVista VDDO-001, in addition to the primary Wexler designation. The 2021-P Lincoln Shield Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc at the Philadelphia Mint under Lyndall Bass's reverse design with Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait. The Shield Cent reverse, introduced in 2010, features a union shield on the reverse with E PLURIBUS UNUM across the top, making the reverse die crack position on the upper shield particularly diagnostic.
