2021 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Identified by Jay Painter, this 2021 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits moderate extra thickness on the date and light extra thickness on LIBERTY — a two-zone doubling pattern where hub displacement affected the date numerals more strongly than the motto lettering. The differential intensity suggests the date, positioned lower on the obverse, fell within a zone of greater displacement while LIBERTY along the upper rim received a lighter secondary impression from the same misaligned hub event. A die gouge south of the second 2 in the date provides a distinctive obverse marker positioned adjacent to the more strongly doubled element, while die gouges inside the lower D of GOD offer additional confirmation points. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2021 1c WDDO-006, this variety belongs to the second decade of Shield Cent production. Painter's discovery demonstrates the continued vitality of obverse variety research on Lincoln cents, where the familiar portrait and legends still yield new hub doubling events more than a century after the design's 1909 debut.
