2021 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

2021 WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 2021 Lincoln Shield cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY shows moderate extra thickness. The Y is considerably thicker at its upper right than at its upper left, the ERTY is notched at its lower left corners, and the date shows slight distortion. Wexler records two stages. The Stage A obverse has a ridge ring through the tops of the OD in GOD and through WE, a diagonal crack through the eyebrow, and a gouge (dot) over TRUST's U at its right edge. Stage B adds a small chip on the lower part of the Y in LIBERTY. On the Stage A reverse: three chips and a light crack on the shield's top left, above the PLU of PLURIBUS; a small gouge below the R in PLURIBUS; a gouge at the rim at 3:00; and a tiny gouge (dot) along the shield's lower left edge, well SE of the initials LB. On the Stage B reverse, the Stage A markers are still visible, and a new chip appears right of the first three chips above the PLU. James D. Wright submitted Stage A, with updated photos and markers from a coin of Kevin Federle's; Christopher A. Hurley submitted Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler notes that the original 2021 WDDO-005 proved to be an earlier stage of this die and was added to this listing as Stage A.
