2021 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

2021 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 2021 Lincoln Shield cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY and the date show moderate extra thickness. The Y is thicker at its upper left than at its upper right, and the ERTY is notched at its lower left corners. Obverse markers: light diagonal scratches through the TY of LIBERTY; a mostly horizontal crack in the hair, under WE's E; a gouge (dot) in the field SSE of the U in TRUST; a gouge (dot) right of TRUST's last T; and a long vertical crack through the front of the forehead. Reverse markers: a short scratch leading south from the U in UNITED at its upper left edge; a light vertical scratch over the T in UNITED; a gouge below the ST of STATES; a small gouge (dot) beside the M of AMERICA, along its left edge; light scratches through the I of AMERICA; a crack with a chip at its right-hand end on the shield's upper left edge; and a gouge (dot) on the lower part of the L in PLURIBUS. • None known Comments: WDDO-002 has a similar die crack on the upper left of the shield to WDDO-001. While the die cracks are similar, close comparison should show them to be different working dies. The die crack for WDDO-001 runs WNW/ESE above the L in PLURIBUS and then turns and runs WSW/ENE above the UR in PLURIBUS.
