Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as the first doubled die obverse for the 2021-D Crossing the Delaware Quarter, VDDO-001 exhibits a medium spread manifesting as an extra earlobe on Washington's portrait — the same distinctive pickup point seen on several other Washington Quarter doubled die varieties. The extra earlobe effect results from hub doubling that displaces the ear detail just enough to create the appearance of a doubled lobe, a feature readily identifiable under moderate magnification. Die marker codes and variety classification numbers were pending catalog assignment at the time of documentation, indicating this was a recently discovered variety not yet fully integrated into VarietyVista's numbering system. Three die states have been identified: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, while Stage B at mid-die state and Stage C at late die state remain unconfirmed. The 2021 Crossing the Delaware Quarter features Benjamin Sowards's design depicting George Washington's iconic 1776 crossing of the Delaware River, a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. Denver struck this issue on copper-nickel clad planchets as one of the final coins in the America the Beautiful quarter series transition period. The extra earlobe diagnostic connects VDDO-001 to a lineage of notable Washington Quarter doubled dies spanning multiple decades of the denomination.
