Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-024 for the 2019 Jefferson Nickel, this doubled die reverse variety presents medium spread south as an extra left top central doorway on the Return to Monticello reverse by Jamie Franki and Phebe Hemphill. The southward displacement creates a secondary doorway contour below the primary impression, visible under moderate magnification as an additional lintel or frame line above the central entrance steps. Die stage documentation uses placeholder UVC and DMR codes (question marks), indicating this variety may be a more recent discovery with attribution still in progress. Stage A represents Early Die State (unconfirmed). Stage B reaches Mid Die State with a diagnostic die break visible outside the lower left building edge, while the obverse also shows MDS characteristics. Stage C is Late Die State, unconfirmed. Die breaks at the building edge are progressive markers that develop as the die accumulates stress from repeated striking, and their presence at MDS rather than LDS suggests this particular die experienced localized weakness at the architectural margin. The 2019-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel composition at 5.00 grams on 21.2mm planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. Examine the central doorway area of Monticello under 7x to 10x magnification for the secondary doorway impression displaced southward from the primary design.
