2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Displaying Class VIII tilted hub doubling, this doubled die reverse on the 2019 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel shows nice doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello — the same architectural feature that produced the 2014-P WDDR-019, demonstrating that this area of the Monticello design is particularly susceptible to revealing hub displacement. Class VIII doubling from a tilted hub creates a directional spread that varies in intensity depending on each design element's position relative to the tilt axis, and the door frame's fine horizontal and vertical lines serve as sensitive indicators of even subtle misalignment. Reverse die markers include a die gouge in the field above the upper right portion of the roof and a small die dot to the left of the large semicircular window on Monticello's facade, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. The semicircular window and roofline details provide reference points for locating the die markers during attribution. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse continues to generate new doubled die varieties as Philadelphia produces millions of nickels annually on the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition.
