Description

Exhibiting the uncommon Class VIII tilted hub mechanism, this 2019 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse shows doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps on Monticello, with additional doubling below the triangle above the center door. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during production, creating a rotational spread distinct from the lateral or vertical shifts of other classes. The architectural detail of Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse — with its doors, steps, columns, and pediment — provides numerous reference points where tilted hub doubling can manifest. Reverse die markers include a small die gouge to the right of the upper portion of the left long window and a small die gouge to the lower right of the M of UNUM. The obverse shows no notable die markers. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-002, this second documented DDR for the date reflects ongoing variety research on modern Jefferson Nickel production, where the intricate Monticello architecture rewards careful examination under magnification.
