Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, VDDR-022 on the 2019 Jefferson Nickel exhibits a medium spread directed Northwest, producing an extra left side and additional top central doorway on Felix Schlag's Monticello rendering. This doubled die reverse was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 5.000-gram copper-nickel planchet (75% copper, 25% nickel) measuring 21.2 mm in diameter. The Northwest directional spread indicates the secondary hub impression shifted both upward and to the left relative to the primary impression, displacing the architectural elements of Monticello's facade in that direction. Three die stages have been documented for this variety: Stage A is an early die state (EDS) that remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows a die depression outside the left building edge at mid-die-state (MDS) with the obverse also at MDS, and Stage C is a late die state (LDS) that also remains unconfirmed. The die depression at the left building edge in Stage B provides a secondary diagnostic marker independent of the doubling itself, allowing collectors to confirm die stage alongside variety attribution. The 2019 Jefferson Nickel belongs to the Return to Monticello series (2006 to date), which restored Schlag's original Monticello reverse after the Westward Journey program. Examination under 7x magnification with raking light across the central doorway area best reveals the Northwest displacement on the architectural details.
